I first read this book as a Master's student studying the differences in birthing practices between the US and Britain. I have since become the mother of 4, giving birth twice in a birthing center and twice in a hospital. The US medical system is designed to be interventionist, to place all faith in a doctor's opinion and an insurance company's bottom line, BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE!
