As most of you know, Diary of a Wimpy Kid is now playing in theaters. Readers of Jeff Kinney's wildly popular series can finally see Greg Heffley's hilarious adventures come to life on the big screen. Coinciding with the film's release is the publication of THE WIMPY KID MOVIE DIARY, which will give you tons of insight into what it takes to turn a book into a movie (plus, it will make you laugh!).

Kinney begins by telling us all about the January 1998 "birth" of Greg Heffley, when he was first doodled into a sketch pad. Coincidentally, only one month later, Zachary Gordon, the baby destined to grow up and play the part of Greg in the Wimpy Kid movie, was born.

Kinney shows us how his ideas about a wimpy kid evolved, first into books and then into the film. We see early sketches of Greg, along with story ideas Kinney scribbled down. Just wait until you see the photo of his Wimpy Kid idea pages from his sketch pad. One page is literally crammed with snippets of ideas and drawings (Kinney says some of these single idea pages took him months to create). He worked on Wimpy Kid drawings and ideas for four years, inventing Greg and all the people and places in Greg's world. Next, he cut photocopied pages of the sketch pad into single jokes, drawings and ideas. He spent several years just pasting these scraps on big sheets of poster board. Then he began typing his ideas into a story. That book, in all its 1,300-page glory, was first published online. Eventually, Amulet Books decided to publish DIARY OF A WIMPY KID, and the rest is literary (and now film) history.

Zachary Gordon read DIARY OF A WIMPY KID and loved the book so much that he told his mother he wanted to be in a movie version if it was ever made. Little could he have guessed that his wish would someday come true!

Meanwhile, Hollywood filmmakers talked about how to transform the book into a movie. Kinney gives us (hilarious) sketches of some of these discussions. Then, step by step, we learn how a movie is made, starting with writers coming in to audition to write the screenplay. Writing a screenplay based on a book, it seems, is an intriguing and complicated process. The writers must choose what parts of the book they will use in the film, and they also add in new scenes to surprise viewers who have read the book. Lots of people have input into the screenplay, so it changes constantly.

Readers of THE WIMPY KID MOVIE DIARY get to meet some of the important people guiding the film, such as director Thor Freudenthal, who kept a diary similar to Greg's when he was a boy. (Some of his journal pages are included in the book.) Meanwhile, the search was on for actors who would bring the parts of Greg and Rowley and all the other characters in the Wimpy Kid world to life.

As Kinney walks us through the making of the film, you'll learn about things you've both wondered about and never even considered. For example, you'll discover how film crew members make such items as fake boogers and arm casts. You'll also learn exactly why Zachary Gordon gets queasy if anyone says "mashed potatoes" to him.

THE WIMPY KID MOVIE DIARY is a terrific book. Fans of the series will especially appreciate this hilarious and witty read, but even newcomers will be motivated to see the movie and read the books (though not necessarily in that order!).

Aside from being a devastatingly good read, Dead Beat introduced four very important elements into the Dresdenverse: the revelation that there is a traitor in the White Council of Wizards, a real hint (in the form of Cowl) of the larger Game, the introduction of Lasciel as a character and Harry being made a Warden. While those were introduced in Dead Beat, aside from Lasciel, none of those elements are really addressed until Proven Guilty.

It is, therefore, little surprise when the eighth book in the Dresden Files opens with Harry witnessing his fellow Wardens in action. Unfortunately, not in the battlefield, but in the courtroom. Now that he is a Warden, Harry is more privy to the nastier side of the job: executing rogue practitioners of the Art. Not killing in self-defense, or in the heat of the moment, but summary execution Guillotine style. Obviously this kind of thing does not sit well with our Hero, but you know it will inform the action to come. Oh yeah, Harry also gets a little "heads-up" from the Gatekeeper that there is Black Magic afoot in the old town.

While the other elements I mentioned earlier develop and unfold over the course of the book and mentioning them would be too spoilery, I will say that they are explored in much more depth in this book. Lasciel continues to have a key role in Harry's adventures, though not as prominent as in Dead Beat, and she and Harry's interaction continues to be one of the more intriguing aspects in the series. Dead Beat sent Murphy off in the opening pages, so that book needed Lasciel to fill a role for Harry, and she did it admirably (if deceitfully), but now that Murphy is back, it was only natural for Lasciel's role to be less prominent (though still important).

I am talking about Lasciel so much because the last time we saw the Carpenter family was the celebration at the end of Death Masks where Harry first acquired Lasciel's Coin trying to save Michael's infant son. We readers are not the only ones who have not seen Michael since then, neither has Harry. Worried what his friend will think, worried that he will sense the Denarian taint, Dresden has avoided Michael for nearly three years. Of course Fate intervenes and sends Michael's oldest daughter Harry's way seeking his help for some trouble of the weird kind. While Proven Guilty brings Michael back into the fold, it is actually more about his wife, Charity and daughter, Molly.

Proven Guilty is a book very much about reconciliations. While the newest book set to come out, Changes, indicates in its title a change in direction, Proven Guilty is a transitional novel in its own right. It was not as evident before, but in re-reading the books, Proven Guilty really feels like the beginning of a departure from the more singular story-telling that dominates the first seven books, and a subtle transition into the more Lore heavy later books. I would point to Dead Beat as the last Dresden Files book you can read out of order without it affecting your enjoyment. But the plot, characters and actions in Proven Guilty are SO driven by events in earlier books, the story's depth is largely dependent on already knowing what has gone before (one of the primary plot points, Horror movie monsters coming alive, was actually a throw away line in Dead Beat, or so we thought!). While it draws them into its loop, and makes them feel as if all the books were connected all the while, it is the first book that FEELS that way while you are reading. I actually read Proven Guilty before Dead Beat the first time I went through Dresden, and for the first time since I had been reading the series, felt as if I was really missing out on something by not reading the previous book. I guess by eight books in, it is hard to summarize so much action and plot development efficiently.

The book itself is quality, however, for whatever reason, it is just not one of my favorite books in the series. I will admit that I just LOVE both Dead Beat and White Night though, so part of it may be the "sandwich syndrome" that I mentioned with Blood Rites, where it is just between two better Files books to me. However, even in that comparison, I would say it falls short of Blood Rites as well, and I would rank it in the lower half of Dresden on the whole. I think part of the problem was the first half of the book just did not flow as well for me as other Dresden books. Setting the book largely around a Horror Convention for the first half might be part of that, as I have read other Urban Fantasy books set around conventions that did not draw me in as well as other books in their series (the Repairman Jack book Conspiracies comes to mind). Another thing I was not as enthusiastic about was the focus on Charity, as even after this book I just am very "eh" on her as a character. However, once Harry starts putting things together, the second half opens up and is a lot more entertaining. In fact the last 150 pages or so is comparable to any 150 pages to be found in the Dresdenverse. I just feel like other books in the series have that kind of stretch in them without taking so much time to get going.

As a transitional book Proven Guilty is excellent, as it reconciles many relationships that will be important later, as well as interweaving disparate allies (such as Thomas and Charity) and forcing them to work in concert out of a mutual respect for Harry. This is something that Harry very much shares with his Butcherian counterpart Gaius Octavian. It is one of Tavi's greatest skills to bring former enemies together and get them to work towards a common goal. It is something that Harry has in him as well, and it definitely will become more of an issue going forward, as Harry continues to accrue both allies and enemies, and it will not always be easy to tell them apart.

404 HC pages. 4 out of 5 stars

I always enjoy reading Ted Dekker books - they never leave you feeling disappointed. As with all Dekker books this one grips you, and has strong good vs evil themes throughout. Elyon is always exciting and you never know what will happen next. The ending of Elyon is especially intriguing...

In summary: Another fine book from a great story teller.

With so much Christian fiction out there some gems get lost in the crowd, so, some other Christian books I'd recommend are the time travel adventure 'Godstone' and 'Amrach'.

I like that this book helps the child think of levels of emotions and appropriate behaviors for different levels. This could be useful in helping a child understand that a full melt down doesn't have to be the first course of action when negative emotions are encountered.

Its a very simple concept of a book which is a good thing -- I'm tired of books padded with extra words to justify their existence. This book has simple directions in the front in a nice clean legible font. This is followed by exercise pages for each emotion. All of that is laminated for durability and so that you can reuse the exercises. In the end are worksheets that can be torn out and used. Its all spiral bounded which makes is again more durable and easy to use.

My only real complaint about the book is that the tabs that stick out of the book are easily damaged. Mine arrived somewhat beat up from shipment. A little better packing would have prevented that but they'd still easily get damaged by use. If the publisher revises the book, I'd suggest that the end board extend to the width that the tabs stick out and that a clear plastic front cover be provided that extends over the tabs.

Having enjoyed all of the series, it is high time I wrote a review on them. These delightful books take place in one of Africa's smallest and most prosperous countries, Botswana, which it has virtually launched onto the world stage. Using an amusing and endearing storyline, and through the lives and reflections of his characters, the author attempts to convey their thoughts and strongly entrenched cultural roots, their values, their love of their country and of Mother Africa.. Arguably, this non-African writer has done more to advance an understanding of Africa than any other local author has since Chinoa Achebe.

Sadly, the rest of the African continent does not fare as well as Botswana, which is very small, relatively wealthy, and has a tiny homogenous population, AND uncorrupt rulers. The rest of the continent languishes under endemic poverty, bad government, environmental degradation, warfare, HIV and other dieseases decimating their population, illiteracy, and apparently little hope for the future. Hopefully another writer will muster up the courage to tackle the far more daunting complexities of Africa in a witty endearing work that will appeal to a western as well as African audience, while maintaining the same respect and sympathy, never judgemental or belittling, that McCall Smith has done for Botswana.

I've been a huge fan of Resnick's since his ground-breaking "Birthright: The Book of Man" release many years ago. Since then he's never failed to please to one degree or another, with (IMO) his best works set in his "Birthright" universe.

This novel takes place in that universe, and is the 5th of a series. I can't go into the plot much without giving things away, but I can say that his characters are utterly believable and completely "human" when it makes sense and "not human" when they're aliens. His settings are fleshed out and "feel" right, and the motives and actions of everybody make sense both within the story and within the larger "Birthright" universe.

A rollicking space adventure that has a bit of everything--betrayal, space battles, insane plans, pointless brutality, good guys, bad guys, and guys with decidedly mixed motivations.

Highly recommended.

Absolutely my all time favorite children's book. My mom read this book to me when I was growing up and I dutifully bring it to every baby shower I go to now. There are so many little details on each page. I love the little flea! My mom used to make us hunt for it while she was reading. Every now and then when my husband is all curled up napping my mind flashes back to the scenes of this book and I think "and in that house there is a bed, a cozy bed in a napping house, where EVERYONE is sleeping". Makes me smile.

NEW! The Book of Totally Irresponsible Science: 64 Daring Experiments for Young Scientists with Free shipping

Effect::: What could be more fun for kids than to have the kind of rip-roaring good time that harkens back to pre-video game, pre-computer days? Introducing 64 valuable science experiments that snap, crackle, pop, ooze, crash, boom, and stink! From Marshmallows on Steroids to Home-Made Lightning, the Sandwich Bag Bomb to Giant Air Cannon, The Book of Totally Irresponsible Science awakens kids' curiosity while demonstrating scientific principles like osmosis, air pressure, and Newton's Third Law of Motion.

Kids will love performing these experiments, which use common household ingredients and equipment, in front of an audience or for themselves (though many require adult supervision). Entries are categorized into seven chapters according to scientific theme and are written in a simple-to-follow recipe format. each includes a detailed explanation of the scientific principle involved and a "Take Care!" section with special tips. The book's design and illustrations recall the pulp fiction look of science magazines from the days when space travel was still considered sci-fi, while the author's voice is wry and a bit conspiratorial. He assumes his readers are clever and never coddles them. Drop Mentos into a bottle of diet soda and stand back as a geyser erupts! Launch a rocket made from a film canister! Always at a loss what to give our nephew for a Christmas present, came across this book at a local hobby store and found a better price on Amazon. I thought it'd be really fun as the science experiments require stuff usually found around the house! I also thought it'd get a kid away from computer games, nurture some science exploration, and avoid the "gift card" commercialization of Christmas giving! Well...not. The kid sorta threw it to the side like..."another loser gift for Christmas" attitude. I don't know if it's because he's 11 and already passed this, or just a Playstation/Wii guy, but this was definitely not a good gift for him. (As a MOM I would buy this for MY kids if I was still at that stage in the game. I'm a Gram already though so would consider it for my own grandkids now and do the experiments with them myself). I WISH parents would nurture this kind of hands on learning more often versus letting kids sit at pc/tv games, but...oh well.

As for the book itself, I think it was nicely written, fun and silly drawings to keep kids interested and amused, short and sweet directions, easy to find materials, real science theories... and I pictured it being a real hit. Can't figure it out : /

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5)

NEW! Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5) with Free shipping

Effect::: I say to you all, once again--in the light of
Lord Voldemort’s return, we are only as strong
as we are united, as weak as we are divided.
Lord Voldemort’s gift for spreading discord and
enmity is very great. We can fight it only by showing
an equally strong bond of friendship and trust.

So spoke Albus Dumbledore at the end of Harry Potter’s fourth year at Hogwarts. But as Harry enters his fifth year at wizard school, it seems those bonds have never been more sorely tested. Lord Voldemort’s rise has opened a rift in the wizarding world between those who believe the truth about his return, and those who prefer to believe it’s all madness and lies--just more trouble from Harry Potter.

Add to this a host of other worries for Harry…
• A Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher with a personality like poisoned honey
• A venomous, disgruntled house-elf
• Ron as keeper of the Gryffindor Quidditch team
• And of course, what every student dreads: end-of-term Ordinary Wizarding Level exams

…and you’d know what Harry faces during the day. But at night it’s even worse, because then he dreams of a single door in a silent corridor. And this door is somehow more terrifying than every other nightmare combined.

In the richest installment yet of J. K. Rowling’s seven-part story, Harry Potter confronts the unreliability of the very government of the magical world, and the impotence of the authorities at Hogwarts.

Despite this (or perhaps because of it) Harry finds depth and strength in his friends, beyond what even he knew; boundless loyalty and unbearable sacrifice.

Though thick runs the plot (as well as the spine), readers will race through these pages, and leave Hogwarts, like Harry, wishing only for the next train back.User friendly.

J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
(Bloomsbury, 2003)

Reviewed by Darren Cronshaw

It was an out of the way store and so we didn't have to wait as long as some customers did in more popular bookshops, but I lined up after 9am Saturday June 21 with other eager J.K. Rowling readers and purchased my copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I even got one of the specially-marked `DO NOT OPEN BEFORE 21st JUNE 2003' book boxes as a collector's item. Before last Saturday 195 million copies of Rowling's Books I-IV had been sold in 55 languages across more than 200 countries. With Book V there is more Harry Potter around - much more with its 766 pages and some 13 million books already printed - one million of them in Australia.

In this latest volume of Rowling's planned 7 book saga, Harry Potter and his friends do yet another year at Hogwarts School. There is a new teacher to hate, new tricks and antics to get up to, and new spells, games and fun that will keep readers intrigued for hours. The book has the most involved battle scene in all of the five books (involving about twenty witches and wizards attacking backwards and forwards). What most captures the imagination, though, is the challenges of growing up. Harry and his classmates are up to their 5th year 'OWLs' (Ordinary Wizarding Level exams), and Harry struggles with adolescence, self-esteem, teasing, longing for affirmation from a mentor, trying to figure girls out, cramming for exams, and losing someone close to him. At one point Harry thought he should have been chosen for a special responsibility (rather than a friend) and he worried anxiously, `Did this make him as arrogant as Draco Malfoy? Did he think himself superior to everyone else? Did he really believe he was better than Ron?' (p.151) Some Christians criticise Harry's situational ethics, but his struggles over decision-making are those that young (and old) can readily identify with.

Apart from adolescent struggles, there was concern after Book IV that the books were getting more graphically evil. Rowling admits her portrayal of evil is getting darker, and that this is necessary to show the true nature of evil (as bad and to be fought against). However, I found Book V to be not as dark as Book IV, but it did deal in more depth with dying and grief. These themes of death, grief, emotional struggle and appropriate use of power are not always neatly resolved but are definitely worth exploring in conversation with our children and with young people around us.

A key lesson that came through is the importance of pulling together. Whether on the Quidditch sport field or in the battle against 'He who can't be named', unity is important. When Harry accepted his destiny, he went to Hogwarts to learn and equip himself for the tasks ahead. This year Hogwart's Sorting Hat adds to its usual start-of-term song this warning to stand together:

Though condemned I am to split you
Still I worry that it's wrong ...
For our Hogwarts is in danger
From external, deadly foes
And we must unite inside her
Or we'll crumble from within (pp. 186-187).

Professor Dumbledore and others who are pledged to fight evil band together and commit to one another in the Order of the Phoenix. The Phoenix is a mythological creature that rises to life from its own ashes, and is known as the `resurrection bird.' The phoenix in the Harry Potter series has saved the life of both Harry and Dumbledore. The bird and its potential for new life is an appropriate symbol of their common struggle for a better world.

As Christians, we gather in resurrection communities that could be called a kind of `Order of the Phoenix' but are more commonly known as churches. I'll be exploring the themes from this latest book with young people in our church, and lining up again next year for Book VI.

Jim Butcher, you sly boots, you've done it again. "Changes," is the 12th book in the increasingly awesome Dresden Files, and the title says it all. Without spoiling it, within the first page we find out that Harry Dresden's world is about to be turned upside down. With more setting altering events than you can shake a stick at, Mr. Butcher will leave you panting for more after the last line. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series since I first started reading it a couple of years back, and man do I wish I had discovered it sooner. I even remember stocking these when I worked for one of the big chain bookstores in my area, and being intrigued, but never enough to just pick it up and read it, boy do I regret it. If you have not checked out this series, and you enjoy fantasy, magic, mystery, tight plotting, believable characters, smart heroes, smarter villains, and a whole mess of action then this is the series for you. I look forward to your next offering sir, and I salute you!

This is my second Kresley Cole novel, and before I'd even finished, I ordered several more of her novels in the Immortals After Dark series. I had read that the heroine played a dominant role in much of this book and wasn't sure how I'd like that, but it was written so that her softer side is apparent and so that the motivations for her personality and actions were believable. I was riveted. The love/sex scenes were believable, unusual, and well-written. Also loved the evil guy. The cast of characters is intriguing. The book begins in a different way from typical romances, even for a paranormal romance it was unusual and I appreciated that. I'm very curious to read about the heroine's sister after meeting her in this book. Highly recommended.
