Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time

NEW! Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time with Free shipping

Effect::: The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign to use education to combat terrorism in the Taliban’s backyard

Anyone who despairs of the individual’s power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistan’s treacherous K2, was inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school. Over the next decade he built fifty-five schools—especially for girls—that offer a balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it chronicles Mortenson’s quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists and uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea combines adventure with a celebration of the humanitarian spirit.User friendly.

PROS:
- Touching, inspiring story.
- The amazing reviews say it all.

CONS:
- Hard to live up to the hype. The stellar reviews set super high expectations that are hard (impossible?) to achieve. That's not the book's fault, just the reader's fault.
- Long winded sentences are hard to follow. They forced me to re-read sentences because it wasn't clear at first. It was easier to follow if you just read fast and not analyze every word.

CONCLUSION: The message that we can do more good by doing good acts than by dropping bombs is profound. Give this man the Nobel Peace Prize!

The Art Book

NEW! The Art Book with Free shipping

Effect::: The Art Book is the first fully illustrated art dictionary. It presents a feast of famous, varied and colourful images by 500 of the greatest artists from the Middle Ages to the present day. Arranged in alphabetical order by artist, it is easy to use. With one large, quintessential image per artist, and an informative text that discusses the work in detail as well as offering information about its creator, The Art Book is both educational and fun.

With the turn of every page The Art Book reveals the works that make up the rich heritage of Western Art, including altarpieces, installations, books of hours, oil paintings, frescos, sculptures, watercolours, prints, ready-mades, collages and many more.

Aimed at teenagers and adults alike The Art Book is for all those who wish to learn about art without being overwhelmed by complicated theories and art historical developments.

Easy to use cross references take you on a journey through the book, to other artists who worked in the same style and other ways the same subject has been treated across the centuries. Glossaries of movements and technical terms explain the sometimes confusing jargon of art historians in simple terms; and an international directory of galleries and museums list the works that are on view to the public.

Presenting a fresh way of looking at art, this book is an invaluable resource for reference and inspiration in every home, school, library or studio. Ideal for those coming to art for the first time, it also serves as a visual sourcebook for teachers and designers, and will be a constant source of stimulus and delight for anyone wishing to look at art with a fresh eye.User friendly.

This is a great book for novice and experts. There is no art history or commentary about the paintings here. The works are non-chronological. So you can get Goya next to Homer next to Pollack.

Experts will enjoy seeing this thick book's paintings in a new context--the veiws are high qaulity. The seemingly random placement can put old work into a new context. If you think of old style, free form FM radio, this book is that to painting.

Newcommers to painting--and this would be a great book to turn kids on to art--will love the rich colors and instant visual sensation. You can open to a random page-a great painting on each- find a work you like, and then research that artist on the internet or in a museum.

The process with Art Book is subjective, and lets the viewer pick a depature point for what type of art he or she wants to further investagate.

This book has been reviewed extensively so I will just give a quick response as to why I liked it. There are not only a lot of good suggestions and explained nuances of marketing your book, it's a really easy read. Mr. Weber doesn't bog you down with long terminology and fluffed out explanations. It is straight and to the point. Some of the subjects may be obvious to you or you may already be employing them, others will have you saying, "Wow, I would have never thought of that".

I would recommend going to the author's web site, which is mentioned in the book as there are some aspects that are now out dated, but updates are available online (not a surprise, with how fast things change in the online world). Two other books I would recommend for some companion information if you are a self publisher are 101 Reasons Why You Must Write A Book: How to Make A Six Figure Income by Writing and Publishing Your Own Book and The Well-Fed Self-Publisher: How to Turn One Book into a Full-Time Living.

What can I say about NAKED IN DEATH that hasn't been said already? Well obviously I don't need to go into the plot because that's been done to DEATH (ha) I will say though that because so many people recommended this book to me and because my friend eventually gave me a copy I did feel somewhat obligated to read it. Robb's Death series is 30 books long (and counting) which is somewhat daunting when starting a new series, so a part of me really didn't want to get hooked on this and for the first hundred pages or so I can honestly say that I didn't.

But then something happened, or I should say someone happened. Someone in the form of a charming, mysterious and utterly addictive Irish billionaire and murder suspect named Roarke. Yes, damn his sweet button carrying self but my new literary boyfriend saved this book because quite frankly detective Eve Dallas on her own isn't very likable and I'm also not really a fan of the police procedurals. It's the sweetness, romance, patience and delicious mystery of Roarke that will keep me coming back.

I also had a hard time understanding why Robb chose to set this in the future (sort of) I say sort of because she never went all the way with her future aspect. Sure she mentions in passing a few cool gadgets (an autochef would really come in handy) and theres flying cars, robot servants, off world business meetings and plenty of clever new cop toys but except for the legalized prostitution and gun prohibition it's still the New York we know of today. I just feel that if Robb was going to go for the whole future angle then she should have gone all the way or just not bothered because her BladeRunneresque vision was gimmicky and rather pointless to the story. But that's just my opinion.

Of course theres a lot to like here too; obviously Robb's (Nora Roberts) writing is top notch and she spins a well planned, easy to read, dark mystery here. Her characters have also been completely fleshed out, in particular Eve. Who although crass, hands off and by the book has enough flaws and skeletons in the closet that you can't help but sympathize with her and hope she loosens up a bit and lets a certain someone in. Which brings me back to Roarke. Maybe this quote describes him best, Cheers!

"You got a button fetish Roarke?"
"I've been carrying this around like a schoolboy carries a lock of his sweetheart's hair." Her eyes came back to his, and something sweet moved through her. Sweeter yet as she could see he was embarrassed.
"That's weird."
"I thought so, myself." But he slipped the button back in his pocket.
"Do you know what else I think, Eve?"
"I don't have a clue."
"I think I'm in love with you."

*Sigh* Yeah so I'm starting book 2 GLORY IN DEATH as we speak

Harry Potter #6: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, by J. K. Rowling

The first time I read "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," I don't remember liking it all that much. After "Order of the Phoenix," it just seemed less complex, shorter, and...I can't quite remember. But for me, "Half-Blood Prince," like "Order of the Phoenix," is a book that gets better and better each time I read it.

I've also read online that J. K. Rowling considers "Half-Blood Prince" and "Deathly Hallows" as two parts of the same book, and when I keep that in mind, I like "Half-Blood Prince" even more.

The Ministry of Magic has finally been forced to acknowledge that Voldemort is back. Harry, Ron, and Hermione scan The Daily Prophet for names of his newest victims, and even Muggles are starting to notice mysterious deaths and weird disasters.

Professor Dumbledore takes Harry under his wing, finally answering some of the questions Harry has had for years. In private lessons, Dumbledore recounts Voldemort's history as Tom Riddle and his rise as a Dark wizard. Harry learns about Horcruxes, magical objects that are the key to Voldemort's immortality. Finding and destroying Horcruxes becomes the main focus of this and the last book in the series.

In their sixth year at Hogwarts, the gang balances the fear of Voldemort's return, a new Potions teacher, and put up with Snape as the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Harry's hormones start to kick in, and while he realizes he likes Ginny Weasley, he's hesitant to date her as her brother is his best friend. And with the help of an old Potions textbook, Harry becomes a superstar in a subject he once hated.

For me the best part of "Half-Blood Prince" is learning Voldemort's backstory, as well as the shift of the series into a more adult tone. There is a lot going on in this book (as in all Harry Potter books), and a few more questions posed. Make sure you can readily get "Deathly Hallows," because you'll be rushing for it after finishing "Half-Blood Prince."

5/5.

Drizzt has come out of so many unbelievably complicated situations in the past, that it's hard to imagine that three key characters die in this book. Drizzt went and got Wulfgar back from Errtu and yet he could not go and get Cattie-Brie back?? And supposedly Meilleiki is also Drizzt's diety of choice - how does he not see this coming?? Or his Goddess help him?

Whereas I can see this opening up lots of new stories - Drizzt and Jarlaxle would make a formidable pair - Mr. Salvatore is going to have to do some whiz-bang storytelling to replace what this book took away from us. And it would seem Jarlaxle is softening - I bet Kimmuriel will have something to say about that!! And good riddance to Artemis Artreri - if he's mentioned in passing, that's all he needs - his point is made (again & again) and now it's done.

Poor Cadderly - a sad end, but I bet we haven't heard the last of him. He was ascending to Godhood and I bet Denier isn't done with him yet. Denier re-writing the Weave should have been expanded - it was never satisfactorily tied up as to what that was all about. I see a whole Cadderly book evolving out of his demise. I hope so - I really liked Cadderly.
