I first read this book as a Master's student studying the differences in birthing practices between the US and Britain. I have since become the mother of 4, giving birth twice in a birthing center and twice in a hospital. The US medical system is designed to be interventionist, to place all faith in a doctor's opinion and an insurance company's bottom line, BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE! This book will give you the tools to ask the right questions, understand general medical practice regarding birth and obtain the birth situation that you desire to achieve. Pregnancy and childbirth are natural processes, not diseases and in most cases, a woman's body will work just as God designed in bringing life into this world. Read this book cover to cover if you want to be an active participant in the early development of your child rather than a science experiment and spectator. Happy birthing!

This book was purchased in advance of taking college level Physiology in order to review prior to taking the class. It's important to note that the course is being retaken after a hiatus of over 5-years because certain health care career programs require it. So if you've taken physiology before and want a great way to review the core information this is a fantastic book to do it!
PROs: lots of well drawn images/drawings and full of the central information
CONs: to do this properly you really should have a 36-color pencil set; if you try to do it with, for example, a 12-color pencil set you will probably become frustrated

In preparation for my daughter's birth I read at least 10 different books about labor and birth. I found this to be the most thorough, unbiased, and useful of all the books I read.
Many of the negative reviews complain that this book has too much of a "natural birth" bias. Well, this depends entirely on what other books you have read and what biases you already have! Compared to "A Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy" or "What to Expest When You're Expecting," it is quite hippie and granola. However, if you are comparing it to "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth" or "Hypnobabies," you will find that this book is much more medicalized. After reading so many books from so many different points of view, I can confidently say that this book strikes a good balance between the two camps.
Sears' clear opinion in this book is that every mother should try for the most natural, unmedicalized birth that she can, without sacrificing sanity or a satisfying, positive birth experience. Artificial pain relief is certainly not banned in this book, merely treated with the caution it deserves.
The scientific studies cited in this book and others clearly demonstrate that medical pain relief can lead to other interventions, such as the use of pitocin and c-section, which CAN have a negative impact on mother and child. Thus, they should be used with caution. I think those reviewers who did not like this book simply did not want to admit that medical pain relief can have these side effects! Any woman who chooses to have an epidural or other relief should not kid themselves into thinking that there is no risk involved in these procedures. Dr. Sears clearly states that there is definitely a place for medical pain relief, but that every woman should strive to have a birth with the least interventions possible, for the safety of both mother and baby. He makes sure to say several times that medical procedures (including pain relief) can definitely be useful in getting an unusual labor back on track, so you should not feel guilty if you need such interventions!
I would highly recommend this book to any and all pregnant women for an accurate, middle-of-the-road view of birth.

I use the Internet and I have a Twitter account. I didn't open an account until June 2009 and even then I was a bit skeptical about Twitter. I really don't need to know what Larry Smith ate for breakfast or that my neighbor down the street just went to the bathroom. However, I eventually realized and understood how valuable a tool Twitter could be and no longer view the medium in disdain. Much of this understanding came after I read THE TWITTER BOOK by Tim O'Reilly and Sarah Milstein.
THE TWITTER BOOK is written not only for people who have never heard of Twitter, but for those, like I used to be, who are interested in using the social networking tool but are a bit wary of it. I used the book for a several months after reading it; I kept it by my computer and used it as a reference tool.
The book is quite easy to read. It contains six chapters, each of which are filled with colorful illustrations, vivid screenshots, and helpful tips. The first chapter in the book describes how to open a Twitter account, what you can type, basic Twitter jargon, and where to go if you need help. The second, third, fourth, and fifth chapters all have to deal with how to accumulate followers, what trends are, programs to help you become a more prominent person in the Twitterverse, how to reply back to messages, the best things to retweet (RT), what you should share about yourself, and much more. The sixth and final chapter of the book is oriented towards those who want to use Twitter for business purposes and how to incorporate the tips, lessons, and strategies you've learned into improving your business presence in the on-line world.
THE TWITTER BOOK is easy to read and understand. It gives a solid foundation of the basics for new Twitter users, but if you've already been using Twitter for awhile, you probably won't find much use in THE TWITTER BOOK. If you're interested in Twitter or have just starting writing tweets and want to know more, I highly recommend THE TWITTER BOOK.
Effect::: Mercer Mayer's very popular Little Critter stars in a picture book about feeling angry. With minimal text and funny illustrations to spell out every new situation, the book shows the Critter family saying no to everything Little Critter wants to do. He can't keep frogs in the tub. He can't help paint the house. Finally, mad at the world, Little Critter announces he will run away. When pals come by and ask him to come and play baseball, our young hero's mood quickly changes. He grabs his bat and heads off for the game, telling himself he can run away another day if he is still so mad.User friendly.

My 16 month old loves to read this book! She brings it to me and says "Mad, Mad" and we read it together. I think she likes the short amount of words on each page and the funny pictures. I think she also likes that "I was so mad" is repeated a few times and so she knows what's coming next. Overall great book to read to a toddler!

The fourth book in King's Dark Tower series is a slight departure from his previous entries. It picks up where the third novel left off but soon uses a flashback to whisk the reader away to Roland's past where the majority of the book takes place. Part love story, part action-adventure, the flashback is so interesting and involving that you forget about the current story for awhile.
At the start of the book, our intrepid ka-tet composed of Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake, and Oy must survive their trip on the insane train Blaine. Using a slight twist on the riddling begun in the previous book, they manage to make it to Topeka in one piece and find a variation on Kansas which is both familiar and foreign to them at the same time. Their trip has taken them away from the path of the Beam however, and they must find their way back via a highway. Nearby is a thinny, a disruption in reality that makes a noise which gets into your head.
Along the way, the group stops and Roland tells a long tale from his past which gives the others insight into how he began his quest for the Dark Tower. The reader also gets a lot of insight into Roland's character from this flashback. Roland, with his best friends Alaine and Cuthbert, his original ka-tet, are sent away from Gilead after Roland earns his guns in order to keep them away from danger. A war with the "Good Man" Farson is seemingly about to spread to the region, but the distant small town of Hambry is thought to be safe. Soon after arrival, Roland meets Susan, a young woman promised to the town's mayor as his consort. Roland and Susan quickly fall in love. Although they try to fight it, fate - ka in this world - brings them together and they do their best to keep their relationship secret. Susan becomes an important part of Roland's ka-tet and aids them in their plans.
Meanwhile, the three boys discover there's some sort of plot related to Farson going on in the town. Not long after arriving they make enemies of a trio who call themselves the Big Coffin Hunters and are friends of the mayor. They are lead by Eldred Jonas who failed his gunslinger test years ago in Gilead. The two opposing ka-tets try to outmaneuver each other, hoping the other will expose their real plans. Roland and his ka-tet find supplies which are part of Farson's plan; however, the most crucial piece is safely hidden away. The Coffin Hunters have temporarily given a local witch named Rhea a crystal ball to keep safe. This ball can show people terrible things, which often have terrible consequences both intended and unintended. In the end, there must be a showdown between Roland's ka-tet and Jonas's ka-tet.
Finally, the story returns to the present day where Roland, Eddie, and the others make their way to an emerald glass building. It becomes clear the group is off to see the Wizard and before long they aren't in Kansas anymore. This portion is much shorter compared to the flashback.
Overall, the book is very engaging, especially the flashback. You learn a lot about what made Roland the way he is today and you can sympathize with him more. Returning to the present day is a bit jarring and this portion pales in comparison to Roland's tale. Despite that, I'm looking forward to reading the next book and seeing where Roland and friends go from here.

Effect::: E. A. Wallis translated and transcribed this work. The Book of the Dead is the name given the ancient Egyptian funeral text 'The Book of Coming '[or 'Going']' Forth By Day'. The book details the Egyptian view of the afterlife. Included are spells, hymns and instructions for the dead to pass through obstacles in the afterlife. This papyrus scroll was placed in the coffin of the deceased. The Book of the Dead was first thought to be a Bible but is it not a religious work. It is more of an instruction manual for the recently departed.User friendly.
This book is proof that many archeologists and egyptologists don't know what they are talking about. For example when the Egyptologists say that The Eye of Horus is supposed to be the sun, this book shows this is simply impossible. It mentiones that the eye of Horus was measured in a specific number of cubits, and even the pupal is measured. ( I don't have the exact measurements handy but it works out to about 15-25 feet and the pupil about 6 feet) The entire object is about the size of a normal large room! How could the Egyptians measure the sun in such an exact number of cubits? Egyptologists completely ignore this! Obviously it's not the sun or an eye either so it indicates something completely unexpected is being measured, not what the authorities on these subjects are suggesting at all. This book shows that we can't take the "authority" on certain subject for granted but should read the source material for ourselves. It reads a bit dry, but hey, it's ancient history. This is a must read for serious ancient history researchers.
NEW! The Book of General Ignorance with Free shipping
Effect::: Think Magellan was the first man to circumnavigate the globe, baseball was invented in America, Henry VIII had six wives, Mount Everest is the tallest mountain? Wrong, wrong, wrong, and wrong again.
Misconceptions, misunderstandings, and flawed facts finally get the heave-ho in this humorous, downright humiliating book of reeducation based on the phenomenal British bestseller. Challenging what most of us assume to be verifiable truths in areas like history, literature, science, nature, and more,
The Book of General Ignorance is a witty “gotcha” compendium of how little we actually know about anything. It’ll have you scratching your head wondering why we even bother to go to school.
Revealing the truth behind all the things we think we know but don’t, this book leaves you dumbfounded about all the misinformation you’ve managed to collect during your life, and sets you up to win big should you ever be a contestant on Jeopardy! or Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
Besides righting the record on common (but wrong) myths like Captain Cook discovering Australia or Alexander Graham Bell inventing the telephone, The Book of General Ignorance also gives us the skinny on silly slipups to trot out at dinner parties (Cinderella wore fur, not glass, slippers and chicken tikka masala was invented in Scotland, not India).
Thomas Edison said that we know less than one millionth of one percent about anything: this book makes us wonder if we know even that much.
You’ll be surprised at how much you don’t know! Check out THE BOOK OF GENERAL IGNORANCE for more fun entries and complete answers to the following:
How long can a chicken live without its head? About two years.
What do chameleons do? They don’t change color to match the background. Never have; never will. Complete myth. Utter fabrication. Total Lie. They change color as a result of different emotional states.
Who invented champagne? Not the French.
How many legs does a centipede have? Not a hundred.
How many toes has a two-toed sloth? It’s either six or eight.
How many penises does a European earwig have? a)Fourteen b)None at all c)Two (one for special occasions) d)Mind your own business
Which animals are the best-endowed of all? Barnacles. These unassuming modest beasts have the longest penis relative to their size of any creature. They can be seven times longer than their body.
What is a rhino’s horn made from? A rhinoceros horn is not, as some people think, made out of hair.
Who was the first American president? Peyton Randolph.

The Book of General IgnoranceFeature for this item
For the dedicated informavore, cracking the first page of this book is like ushering a person with a drinking problem into an Oktoberfest celebration. Consisting of over two hundred questions that many people THINK they know the answer to, The Book of General Ignorance proceeds to deflate the readers' pride in their own knowledge with both dispatch and humor.
With queries ranging from "What human artifacts can be seen from the moon?" to "What would you use to overpower a crocodile?", the authors cover topics ranging from astrophysics to particle physics, from the sex lives of earwigs to the homicidal habits of hippos, all in clear and humorous prose.
It would be tempting to look at this book as simply a larger and more explicit version of picking up a box of Trivial Pursuit cards and going through them one by one. And if you're someone that has actually done this (Sadly....I'm one of those people), you'll love this book. For many readers, delightful as the tidbits provided are, it will leave one with the odd and unfulfilling feeling one gets when one goes to a party, not having had dinner, and all that is available is a vast array of tasty appetizers: one gets stuffed, but keeps vaguely missing the main meal. That said, there is a takeaway message or two that have lasting substance.
The first message from author John Lloyd, who quotes from the man who DIDN'T invent the light bulb (Thomas Edison) "We don't know a millionth of one percent about anything." Secondly, Lloyd feels that in addition to drives for food, shelter, and sex, mankind has a fourth drive: curiosity. And we should indulge this drive. Lastly, much that we think we know, we are in error about. The book, in a funky and funny way, is a call to humility, a call to lay aside pomposity, cockiness, and fear, the better to take off whatever lenses we have been gazing at the world through and to take a fresh look at information that is often staring us in the face. Information that just might push back the shoreline of ignorance just a few feet. As narrow as that newly uncovered beachfront might be, it is bound to hold fascinating clues to what is under that ocean of ignorance that we humans so badly want to explore.
